About the Owner – Colin Thompson
Colin L. Thompson was born and raised in Zimbabwe, Africa. His father was a prominent Nationalist Politician actively engaged in the struggle for independence in Zimbabwe. These were trying times for the Thompson family living under a brutal regime. Several family members left the country and found their way either to England or America.
Colin first arrived in America in 1969 where he attended Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. After graduation he spent several years working in Zambia, Malawi and Zimbabwe but in 1989 decide to immigrate to America with his wife, three daughters and son. He soon realized the opportunity to start his own business in the states and decided to embark upon the representation of the talented stone carvers of Zimbabwe.
At the time Shona Stone Sculpture was a relatively new art phenomenon in the U.S. and Colin traveled to Zimbabwe to select the finest of sculpture to travel around the U.S. with to supply collectors. With the help of his two sisters in Zimbabwe, Colin has been able to maintain a good relationship with several top sculptors and has also helped to propel the careers of up and coming Zimbabwean sculptors.
Zimbabwe Gallery is well known as one of the leading suppliers of Shona Sculpture throughout the U.S. with clients ranging from across the board and more notable some recognizable figures such as Ambassador Andrew Young of Atlanta, GA. Dr. Louis W. Sullivan of Atlanta, GA., and Patti La Belle of Philadelphia, PA.
